Recently, WalletHub assessed all 50 U.S. state capitals to determine which were the best and worst to live in. Austin dominated the list as the best state capital to live in.
To come up with the ranking, WalletHub compared all 50 state capitals across 51 key indicators. The indicators include affordability, economic strength, quality of education and health, and overall living standards. According to the WalletHub report on the list, “our data set ranges from cost of living to K–12 school-system quality to number of attractions.” In the end, WalletHub was able to develop a comprehensive list of the best state capitals to live in based on a huge variety of criteria.
Best State Capitals Category Rankings
Austin scored highest for “Quality of Education and Health.” In that category, WalletHub ranked Austin second out of all 50 state capitals. According to CollegeSimply.com, there are 12 colleges within 50 miles of Austin. They include the University of Texas at Austin, Huston, Tillotson University and St. Edward’s University. As far as health goes, there are numerous healthcare-related clinics and hospitals throughout Austin. The most notable of which are St. David’s Medical Center, Seton Medical Medical Center and the new Brackenridge medical campus in Central Austin. There are also medical clinics and suburban hospitals in development in and around Austin.
The Live Music Capital’s next-best rank was in the category of “economic well-being,” in which is ranked third. WalletHub assessed economic well-being on criteria that includes:

Austin also scored very highly in the “Quality of Life Category.” In that category, Austin took fourth place out of 50. To determine the quality of life rankings, WalletHub took into account a city’s share of millennial newcomers, nightlife options per capita, bars and movie theaters per capita among other criteria. Austin has long been a millennial magnet and has earned the number 2 spot on the Forbes list of Best Cities and Neighborhoods for Millennials.
