Austin has experienced a population boom far greater than most other cities in the country. In fact, new data shows that in a five-year period, Austin has experienced the second-fastest growing population in the nation. When compared to the city of Austin, the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) has seen equally strong population growth.
The U.S. Census Bureau conducted a 5-Year American Community Survey data series. Every December the demographic report reveals the bureau’s most detailed demographic data outside of the decennial census. It also provides detailed information at the national, state, local and neighborhood levels.
Austin Area Population Growth Numbers
This December, the survey shows that the Austin metro population grew faster than all other large metros in the U.S. during the past five years except one. Throughout the Austin area — Travis, Hays, Bastrop, Caldwell and Williamson counties — the population grew by slightly more than 16 percent from 2010 to 2015. As of 2015, the Census estimates that the area’s population stood at a little under 1.9 million. That’s up from 1.6 million five years prior.
City Of Austin Population Growth Statistics
In the City of Austin, the population grew 16 percent from 764,130 in 2010 to 887,060 in 2015. The increase reflects a 16 percent population increase. According to the census neighborhood data, particularly rapid growth has taken place in parts of downtown and Central Austin. There have also been population booms around lower Shoal Creek and along North Lamar Boulevard. Conversely, neighborhoods around the Central Business District and the Texas Capitol Building have lost residents.
