Personal finance services website, Wallethub, regularly compiles lists of best cities for its readers to determine which U.S. cities offer the best career opportunities, most affordable lifestyle options or best commute among other things. One of its most popular lists is the best large cities to live in. For 2018, Austin made the top three in the ranking among 62 cities.
A Little About Austin
With a population just under a million (according to the most recent statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau), Austin is a large city that’s grown popular with college grads and newcomers seeking a great career in a city with a vibrant nightlife and affordable lifestyle options. Known as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” Austin has established itself as a hip metropolitan with a variety of festivals and entertainment options to satisfy residents and visitors alike.
To create the list of “Best Large Cities to Live In,” Wallethub compared the 62 largest U.S. cities (those with populations greater than 300,000 each) across across five key dimensions: 1) Affordability, 2) Economy, 3) Education & Health, 4) Quality of Life, and 5) Safety. Wallethub analysts ranked each of the five categories based on 56 key “indicators of attractiveness.” The indicators include the quality of public schools, life expectancy, job opportunities, property taxes and much more. Overall, Austin took the number 3 spot, beating out cities like San Francisco, San Diego and New York. Austin ranked highest in the economy category, coming in at number 2 overall. Austin also received top marks for education and health, ranking an impressive number 8 overall.
